On the early 42’s the bottom of the carrier is smooth so you have to use your index finger to hold the shell or shells in place with one hand and feed the remaining with the other hand. (my way) on the later ones Winchester punched a small stop on the bottom of the carrier to help with the cumbersome loading. The shell rim will catch it and stay in place as you push the next one forward.
