I have an opportunity to purchase a Model 42 with 99% Blue, but the stock has been refinished. I would like your opinion on how much the refinishing has hurt the price? Also, should I let this one go and wait for one with original stock?

Delbert,

In my opinion, the refinished stock knocks at least 40% off the value. Are you absolutely sure that the bluing is factory original?

Thank you very much for your quick reply. Forty percent is more than I thought.

No! If the wood needed refinishing, I would think the bluing would too. I will try to find more info.

I am very new to collecting firearms, and I know I know very little. I researched it in value books and internet sales but found no info on the percent refinishing the bluing and/or wood would lower the value.

That research gave me a maximum price. I will subtract 40% and see where that gets me when I try to buy.

Now I am thinking why do I want a refinished gun! I must give this a lot more thought.

I would suggest waiting for an all original gun at a reasonable price would probably be better.    Guns that have something not quite right are what I call “excuse guns”……they are always “great guns but…..”
