Are 2 digit serial numbers highly sought after on 42’s? The one I am looking at is under 50. The gun is probably 80% condition, blue wear on the high spots,a couple nicks in the wood. Its a plain barrel field grade.I know the gun is totally original.Any idea on value?Sorry no pictures.

Think about this.  Less than 100 Model 42s were produced with two digit serial numbers!  Wink  I have never encountered  a Model 42 that wasn’t desireable! Congrats!  RDB

I like low serial numbers but the amount of added premium depends on the buyer as some place much more value on that situation than I do. It was my pleasure to spend some time with Model 70’s SN 12 and 6 at the Cody show and I can verify the interest in low serial numbers is strong. Personally I’d give as much as a 15-20% premium for a gun in the 50’s over a similar gun with a five digit serial number but other collectors may pay more, especially if it had a vent rib and fancy wood. I have a handful of guns with four digit SN’s but don’t think I paid a premium for the low number.

Pricing on two digit guns is very surprising and bring premiums as long as they are in original condition. Ive personally seen numbers 20, 21, 22, 23, 29, 41 and 89 sell in the past few years.  Some of these were private sales and some auctions.  All of them have brought a minimum of $6000 each if you factor in the action fees.
