This may have been covered some where else, but I am new to researching Winchesters and I have several questions.
I have come across a gun being offered as an engraved pigeon grade model 42. As I know nothing about Winchesters I got my hands on a copy of the Ned Schwing book. The serial number is stamped in the 62XXX range which the book says is 1947. I have researched enough to see this is an extremely rare gun. In reading the book with my brother, the first thing he pointed out was the vented rib, which the book says wasn’t offered until 1954? unless I am just reading wrong? the other issue is the grip cap doesn’t match what the book says was offered in 1947 it matches either 1952 or 1954 look. The seller has said the vented rib was a special order option even in 1947, and also the grip cap may have been the same. I am sure this begs more questions, but I am trying to get a handle on whether this gun maybe correct or if I am just not well versed enough to understand what I am looking at. Anyone that has any info please let me know, and if there are other questions I can try and get pictures or explain what I see
A couple things to look for, if the vent rib is original the sight was drilled and tapped in the rib only. The solid ribs were drilled thru the rib and barrel. So if the barrel is drilled the rib is aftermarket. If the engraving is factory the choke marking is moved forward to allow for engraving. With what you have stated It’s most likely non origonal. I have an origonal Piegon 42. Most were engraved, mine is not. I own 25 42s and by no means an expert, however I have spent many hours with Don Combs who in ny opinion is. If you look at the front cover of the 42 book you will see his name. Most of the samples in the book I have had the pleasure to personally view. Eisenhower was one of my favorite presidents and to hold and shoulder his two 42 was a real thrill for me.
