Hello all, I am going down the survey rabbit hole for the first time so I can actually contribute around here one day. I enjoy the story about Winchester’s journey to producing a viable semi-auto shotgun and all the trials and tribulations along the way. If you have a 1911 shotgun or know someone who does, I would appreciate you taking the time to contribute information either in this thread or by sending me a PM. You may also email me at jeremy.polk “at” hotmail.com.
Here’s the info I’m looking for:
- Serial number and if marked with an “A”
- barrel length (probably 26″ or 28″)…should ALL be 12 ga.
- choke (full, cyl, or mod)
- wood is most likely “plain” – if you have any checkering on stock or forend, please let me know that and I’ll follow up
Based on your serial number I may reach back out to follow up on other features. If you have extra time and don’t mind the effort, please provide:
- the latest patent date on the barrel address (likely July 18 1911 or June 4 1912
- any inspection stamps and where located
- if serial number is 60,000+, please provide upper tang stamp (MOD 1911 or MOD 11)
- butt plate (orig HRBP or replacement)
- LOP (measure center of trigger to middle of stock rear, likely 13.75″)
- an overall photo
Thanks everyone and happy collecting!

Good day from Australia.
In Australia these are restricted item, but I own two, and I can give you details of those destroyed in Queensland in the 1997 Gun Buyback.
Here is the first one
- erial number and if marked with an “A” Mine is A23455
- barrel length (probably 26″ or 28″)…should ALL be 12 ga. 12 Ga 642 mm barrel (25.28 inches) -quite short
- choke (full, cyl, or mod) FULL Choke (surprising on a short barrel – I will get a choke gauge and check it later.
- wood is most likely “plain” – Plain wood
- the latest patent date on the barrel address (likely July 18 1911 or June 4 1912 -June 4 1912
- any inspection stamps and where located – Only Winchester Proof centre top of barrel and Receiver
- if serial number is 60,000+, please provide upper tang stamp (MOD 1911 or MOD 11) Upper Tang is MOD 11
- butt plate (orig HRBP or replacement) – Winchester Repeating Arms – Black “Plastic”
- LOP (measure center of trigger to middle of stock rear, likely 13.75″) – 350 mm = 13.78 inches)
- an overall photo See “Model 1911 SA Shotgun – 003a” I bought th gun in 2007, and have uses it for my monthly Sporting Clays competition – with my own hand loads. I could not hit anything until I fitted a recoil pad over the butt to give an extra inch of pull. It is in excellent condition with no loss of bluing except on the upper tang.
My second gun was bought in 2010 I think. It is completely dismantled and I have never gone back to assemble – even made a C spanner- but could not buy buffers. I do nknow what they were made of and would love to know. It is in a box in the secure store and I will get it out in due course.
The Serial Number is 17979 – but unsure if there is an A. My Police List has an A on A23455 but not on this one. I will check
Good luck- My project is the Models 1200-1500, 1960 to 1964, and it is near completion.

Thanks for all the info Keith….are you double sure on the upper tang for the 23455? Up until 60k+ they should be “MOD 1911” with the “19” disappearing around 70k….everything else jives. Can you confirm that for me and send a pic maybe?
On the second gun, let me know when you get the other details. It most likely has a “A” but I’d like at least the barrel length/choke/plain style at a minimum on it.
I’d take the destroyed guns too if you have the serials (and any other info? not likely, I know)….I can document them as well….too bad on that. I cringe to think of all the old antiques and classics that fell prey to these dumb as hell buybacks.
One day I’m going to get into the fibrous buffer rings and try to learn more about them and maybe figure out a reproduction part even, but we are a ways from that still. Goals!

Hello Again
I would prefer to email the destroyed guns list – [email protected] – as it is too voluminous to go on a Forum reply.
To answer your queries:
1. are you double sure on the upper tang for the 23455?- good eyesight See photo. It is FULL choke and measures 17.50 mm = 0.689
2. details on # A17979 -Yes it has an A, and the Upper Tang is MOD. 1911 SA – see photos. I have included a Barrrel marking – very small but the last patent No is 1912. It is 640 mm long = 25.1 inches, and has not been cut, FULL choke measures 17.00 mm = 0.669 inches. I assembled the stock and as per the photo it has a Recoil pad, BUT the stock has not been cut by comparison with my other gun, so it has the same Trigger Pull length.
As you can see, # A17979 is rusty – many guns were hidden and stored in damp conditions when they were banned in 1997 by the usual citizen, but were resurrected during an amnesty, the first being 2004.
Regarding Buffer Washers, Numrich used to sell them, but they would not sell overseas, and now all Australians are blocked from their site. I did obtain the part number in 2019 and it is attached. If you approach Numrich about your project, ask what they were made of and their dimensions, they may assist you – or may even make you some for a minimal order – I would buy two. I have other Numrich drawings and part Numbers, and if you can use them ask by email please.
Keith
