I’ve only owned one Heavy Duck but I believe one reason for its reduced recoil when firing 2 3/4″ shells was the factory installed pair of lead cylinders in the buttstock, to improve balance and reduce recoil.

Not to derail the thread, but a local gun shop has one on consignment, for (if I recall correctly) $400. I had no knowledge of these guns until I read this thread, but the shotgun stuck out to me because of the unusual roll stamp that some of you displayed here. I didn’t look it over very hard, but I don’t think it had fancy wood or a vent rib. I’ll have to go back in check, but I believe it looked fairly well used and didn’t present all that well.
As an aside – they also have a very well used Model 25 as well, for $250.
As long as the wear on that Heavy Duck is cosmetic, e.g. scratched up wood, deteriorated recoil pad, blue wear — but no external or internal pitting, no muzzle device or barrel damage, at that price it’s a serious candidate for restoration.

Interesting, thanks for the insight. I’m leaving for a Mule Deer hunting trip right now, but I’ll go back and take a look at it again when I return – if it is still there. I toyed with making an offer for the Model 25, but just last night I stumbled on a Model 12 for $210. Serial number on that one is 200751, so a 1919 manufacture according to the forum tool. Looks pretty worn, but at $210 I think it was a decent deal.
I’ll take pics and post in a new thread when I get it and get a chance.
I’d guess you don’t have far to go for Mule deer, unless you’re going up to the panhandle. I’ve got cousins in Payette. Best of luck.

Hard to go wrong with a Model 1912 for $210. If it’s not original you have one of the finest pump shotguns ever made. If it’s all original you’ll need to stash it until the Gun Police quit sniffing around,.
Have a great hunting trip, Dave. Be safe on the road and in the field!

A mere two and a half hour drive to my spot outside of Mountain Home. Opening day was the 10th, and I had mine on the ground and was dragging it out about 2 hours after sunrise. Stuck around to help my friend, then came back yesterday. All processed and vacuum sealed, and in the freezer.
@Mike – I’ll be going to the auction house tomorrow to pay up and take it home. I’ll start a thread when I get it home, and let you guys pick it apart.
