I just picked up a Winchester pump a few days ago and the store I got it from said it was a ranger 120 and fair enough it has ranger 120 with a winchoke on the barrel but my father has had a ranger 120 for 30 years and it’s different

this shotgun I picked up looks identical to images of a 2200 when I google it

the serial number is L578464 it’s a 12 gauge

if Anyone has any info on what I may have bought or what year it was made it’s much appreciated thank you.

Hello Jordon

I will assume you meant to type “1200”. S/N L578464 is a Model 1200 that was manufactured in the 1969/1970 time frame. The Model 120 Ranger was introduced in 1981 as an “economy” variant of the Model 1200, and as such, the barrels can be interchanged between the two models.

I just inherited a Winchester Ranger Model 120 12 GA, serial number L1490061, from my father. The specifications do not match because the barrel measures 18.11 inches. Has it been modified or were they produced this way at one time? Thank you in advance for your reply. Best regards from France.

Your Model 120 Ranger was manufactured in the year 1983.  Unfortunately, the barrel has been cut down (shortened).  The standard barrel length was 28-inches.

Good day Jordan and Laurent.

Jordan, your shotgun # L578464 was stamped in December 1969, and would be 1970 production.  It may well be a Model 2200 and the Ranger barrel would fit it.  I have been studying these models for many years and if you either Post or send me by email clear photos of the left and right sides, the butt plate and the Serial number I will advise you further.  I have published on the Model 2400 in the Fall 2023 mag – See The Winchester Model 2400 Shotgun by Keith Nix .

Laurent, Bert is correct about the year, and again you may have a model 2200, as they were made until 1989, were sold in Australia and I have also found them in France. Model 120s and 2200s were not sold with 18 inch barrels, but Model 1200s were still sold with 18 inch RIOT barrels in 1982-83.  The attached “Figure 1 Excerpt-1982-December Winchester Australia Price list # 917 Page 3” shows how they were advertised in Australia in 1982.  Although they were advertised as “Scrub Guns” they were the Model 1200 RIOT model as can be seen from the UPC Numbers G120007 and G120020.  If you either Post or send me by email photos I can advise further.

Troy,

Your Model 120 Ranger was actually manufactured by the U.S. Repeating Arms Company using the trademarked “Winchester” name.  The serial number on your Model 120 indicates that it was manufactured in the year 1984.

The Model 120 was an “economy” variant of the Model 1200, and was retailed my K-Mart, Walmart, and other like retail stores.
