My 1913 vintage 16 gauge model 1897 will drop the hammer when the trigger is pulled even though the hammer is in the safety notch. I can also cycle the action when it’s in that position. Obviously, something is worn and needs to be replaced. What should I check?

I suggest taking it to a competent gun smith to determine what needs to be fixed or replaced. It is impossible to diagnose a malfunctioning gun from afar (over the internet).

A gunsmith would probably charge more than the old beater is worth. I have replaced extractors, etc., in these guns, so I am fairly familiar with them, but I’m no expert. I was hoping that someone who knows more about them than I do could suggest what may be the problem.
