Greetings all!

The Records Office is open today and tomorrow (October 24 and 25) to support the folks at the WACA Eastern Show in West Springfield, MA and the Dakota Territory Gun Collectors Association Show in Big Stone City, SD. We will be closing up shop at 3 p.m. (Mountain time) both days.

CFM members get free serial number searches and 20% off factory letters, letter packs, and search packs. Non-members (of the CFM) may get the first two searches free then pay $10 each. Non-members also get $10 off of factory letters.

Also note…we will be open November 7 & 8 for the folks at Wanenmacher’s Tulsa Arms Show then travelling to the Big Reno Show the following weekend. Show search deals are the same for these shows but the Show Sale will change.

Are you travelling to any of these shows? Would you like to help promote what the Records Office can do for collectors? Contact me here or at the office if you want to have CFM/Records Office flyers on your tables…you get freebies for helping!!

Have a great weekend, we hope to hear from many of you!

Hi Jesi. I’m new to this forum (just joined as an International Member) and keen to find out more on RIC marked Winchesters model 1897.  Could I ask for help please on the following serial numbers – E721001 and E704063 ?

I’d also be keen to know if there are any letters/files relating to the sale of circa 1000 Winchester shotguns to the Royal Irish Constabulary in 1919/1920.  These may have been ordered by the British ‘Ministry of Munitions’ or the London Armoury Company as far back as August 1919 but may not have been fulfilled until July 1920.  There may have been subsequent orders following this 1000 ordered, but I am not sure on this.

ThanksLaugh

Peter,

They will not have any warehouse records on the 97 in those serial number ranges, they will only have the serial number application date. Here is a link to the records serial number range. Winchester Serial number list

If you want Cody to do research looking for RIC information, they charge $50/hour for doing that.

Thanks Bob. I’m still hoping Jesi will get back with at least a date of finishing, though I’d guessed there would be little else. I must remember to start charging myself whenever I’m asked for information on the RIC!!

Peter,

Per my research of the Model 1897, serial numbers 704063 and 721001 were manufactured in late 1918 and early 1920 respectively.  Based on that, I would suspect that they were on different orders/shipments.

Thanks for that information Bert. I take it you extrapolated those dates based on known manufacture dates of other shotguns around the same serial numbers?

My reason for asking is that I am trying to piece together the serial number ranges and configurations of the 1000 (if that is correct) shotguns ordered by the British Government for the RIC, and if these were made to order, or (more likely) fulfilled from stocks held by the agents.  I can speculate about the latter, but that is not really what I want, I would like more substantive proof.

As regards the configuration I suspect they were all made as 20″ barrel riot guns; however the Imperial War Museum has an example trench gun, and I have a 30″ barrel piece which I am told was how it was captured in a barracks raid.  My natural suspicion leads me to think that (a) the one trench gun example seen was a later modification, and (b) my 30″ barrel was also added later.

This link will take you to the little I know about RIC marked Winchesters (click – RIC Winchesters ), and for ease of reading I have copied the known serial numbers and other notes into this post.

RIC Number Serial No. Barrel Notes

333 E704063 20” Private Collection
150 E704601 20” Private Collection
431 E705832 20” Mellows Barracks Galway
831 E718540 20” Imperial War Museum
762 E719551 20” Private Collection
355 E720456 20” Private Collection
677 E720605 N/A Dealer
732 E720899 20” Imperial War Museum (Trench Gun)
N/A E720979 20” Private Collection (modified barrel)
596 E721001 30” Private Collection
522 E721165 20” NMI Turlough
753 E732426   Dealer

I would be grateful if any readers could add the serial numbers/RIC markings/configuration of any other examples they have so I can collate them.

thanks again
