I recently acquired an 1897 “Trap Model” 12 ga. that dates to 1908.  It came with a Western Field recoil pad that I would like to fit with a period correct Butt plate.  I suspect it will have to be a replica.   Can anybody recommend a supplier of quality replica butt plates?  I am in touch with Vintage Gun Grips.  So far I haven’t found a plate that I can work with.  They are too long to trim.

Thanks,

Jim

Jim,

Part of your problem with fitting a repro butt plate may be a result of the stock being cut down (shortened) when the recoil pad was installed. The butt stock should have a LOP of at least 13-inches.

Thanks Bert,

LOP is 12-13/16″ as measured from the trigger to center of the butt.  From your previous comment it appears the stock may have been modified to fit the recoil pad.  I expect this is a common practice when fitting a recoil pad.

If the stock has been modified, maybe it’s better to leave the recoil pad in place since it is still in good shape.

Jim,

Yes, the butt stock was most likely cut down when the recoil pad was fitted. If it were me, I would see if a reproduction Winchester solid red rubber pad could be fitted up to the stock.

I like that idea, I will look into it.  Do you have anybody in mind that handles these reproductions?
