I was wondering if anyone could tell me how many cartridge stop styles were made during the 1897s production run? I have a 12 gauge serial number 620xxx, so production in 1915 I believe. I’m missing the right side cartridge stop & screw. I see a style C, an earlier type by the looks of it with an external screw. I also see some that look similar to the left side I have. What should I be looking for? Hope somebody can help!
Thanks!
Reed
Your Model 1897 was manufactured in December 1914 per the factory records.
In answer to your question, you need an “E’ series (style) cartridge stop. The good news is that the “E” series was the larger percentage of the Model 1897 (97) production run.

Thank you once again Bert.So were there any other styles besides the E that had the mounting screw coming up through the bottom of the receiver?

Th cartridge stops were identical for all “E” series Model 1897 (97) 12-ga shotguns. The “C” and “D” series cartridge stops are not compatible with an “E” series gun.
The following is an excerpt from the article I recently wrote for future publication in the Winchester Collector magazine;
“In late June of 1908, the new “E” series guns began to appear, and they rapidly replaced the “D’” series. This highly useful change (improvement) was made to the receiver frame with the addition of magazine (cartridge stop) release buttons. This allowed for the rapid and safer unloading of the gun without the need to cycle each loaded shell individually out of the magazine tube into the action. By depressing both of the release buttons (one on each side of the receiver), it retracts the cartridge stops on the opposing sides of the receiver thus allowing the magazine tube spring to rapidly eject all remaining shells in the magazine tube out the gun’s loading port.“
