This is my first attempt at posting, just recently joined. First thing I did was to read the article by Brad Dunbar “Late Season 33”. Just by the Title of the article, I figured to it to be of particular interest to me, and it was. Excellent, just my way of hunting, and about a Win 86 in 33wcf, a rifle and cartridge I’ve long been fascinated with, don’t have, but would very much like too, along with the same rifle in 35wcf!

But I’m a regular deer hunter who usually takes deer with one my 30-30’s, a Mod 64 & 94. Really looking forward next to reading Bert Hartman’s writing on the Mod 64, my favorite subject!

Anyways love the site, got plenty to benefit from here, wish I could be of better contributer, but I’m not really a collector, just a hunter with a few Winchester rifles and Shotguns.

Especially looking forward to receiving printed copies, not much for computers!

Welcome David.  I have never owned a Model 1886 in 33 WCF but I do have a Model 1895 in 35 WCF.  This round is a shoulder buster even with a shotgun butt.  Not something you want to go out and target shoot.  Either of these will most likely have to be hand loaded.  If you don’t want to hand load buy a Model 1886 in 45-70.  You can get loaded ammo for this one.

Welcome!

Please get in touch with me to discuss your Model 64.

Check with Heather to see if she still has any copies of the Winter 2022 Collector magazine laying around.

Chuck, the 33wcf has always been the cartridge that got my interest! I guess starting back years ago when I first read about Ben Lily, his rifle! And I always read everything I could from Townsend Whelen, and he once said the 35wcf was the best of elk cartridges! But I figured the 35wcf would be overkill for my use!

Bert, my 64 is actually a 1971 NRA Centennial Model 94, which by configuration, is just a Mod 64a in 72&73. You just don’t see these rifles around here in E.Ky, never have. Except one, a long time coworker has had one in a safe, along with a bunch of precious old Winchester’s since I’ve known him since 1983. But no way he’d sell it!

I found the NRA Centennial in a pawn shop, unfired, from a collector who had pawned his collection in, my rifle being the last one still on rack. I said sold as soon as I touched it, knowing I’d not run upon another like it! Now, knowing what I know about this rifle, accuracy, functioning, fit and finish, I honestly wouldn’t trade it for an original ore64, me and this rifle are family! I know Lotta people kinda frown upon the special editions, and I did at first. Until I put it to use! I put a Williams Receiver Sight on it, and fir hunting the Appalachian Mountains, I know it to be as good as it gets for a true iron sight hunting rifle! I have scoped 30-06s, 270, and few others, but the My Mod 64, is just like Baby Bears Soup! And I won’t call it anything but a Mod 64!

But I believe from all I’ve read if the 33wcf, I’d really enjoy this cartridge, reloading for it, in an 86!

I will be getting your back issue of the Mod 64!

Not to steal a new members thunder But welcome to the asylum! And in IMHO the 33 is the best. Well the 45-90 has a HUGE place in my heart as well. Just ask Steve! My advise is get one, you won’t regret it. 86’s in that caliber are still generally affordable and ammo can be found with little effort. It may be older but im shooting some stuff from the 50″s with no problem. It is also easy to reload. Here is a pic of one of my fav’s

Now that’s a nice Model 1886 rifle!

How about a thread about it?

Welcome M64lvr! You may not yet realize you’re a collector but almost all of us started out small. A collection doesn’t need to be large. As you’ve discovered lots of great reading around here as you have already found with access to past issues of the Collector and forum posts. Looking forward to learning about your collection. I’m a closet fan of the 33, don’t have one yet but have considered gathering the components and loading dies so I’ll be ready when the right one comes along.

Welcome, M64lvr.  As you can see, you’ve been infected by a shared disease. But our forum is a lot more fun than, say,  “The Hanson’s Disease Forum” where the topics include “Progressive Numbness” and “What Body Part Fell Off This Week?”

Do show us your 64A. Winchesters were a favorite of Devil Anse so Kentucky pawn shops have got to be lucky places to shop!

TxGN, you’re right, actually have been a Win nut all my life! I’m much more interested in the using aspect vs the collecting anyways! I’m finding out the brass for the 33wcf is almost non existent, most form their own from other cartridges. I’ll probably never run across one anyway, I don’t shop the internet,  have just always settled upon what I find around here. Certainly don’t need one, but that doesn’t stop the desire! And have always been interested in the 348 Mod 71.

I just finished reading the article about Ben Lily, first time I’d seen anything about him in years. I remember well he used an 86 in 33wcf, but I read he also used a 94 in 30-30. Amazing story, and admire his selection of firearms.  But I’m happy to find WACA, always enjoy everything Winchester. Thanks for the welcome!!!

The 45-70 is the most common cartridge used to form 33 WCF cases.  I briefly discussed it in my recent article on the late production Model 1886 rifles.

Thanks Zebulon, I just saw the post. Yes it’s called “Guntucky” for a good reason. When I was raised in 60s-70’s especially, but the pickings have gotten slim. I’ll TRY to post a pic soon? Actually went early this morning and shot my Mod 94 Carbine. Go out door, get on my 4w, and got 000’s acres of shooting mountain ranges wherever I choose. I’d about quit hunting and shooting for Lotta years, except my 22’s=squirrel rifles, a lifetime of that! But when I retired in 2016, all of sudden I went Levergun and Deerrifle kinda crazy, and reloading too. I’m kinda like a kid again! It’s something very good to do!

I saw that article Bert, I’m gonna read it soon. No I don’t know you, or barely anything about this site? But I’d done figured out before joining,  You are a wealth of Winchester’s and their knowledge, to a plain Jane like myself! Already thankful for what you do!

But can’t remember exactly how I came about this place. A search on Mod 64’s, a year or so back, and I found your most recent article on the 64. I’d already kept it on my phone. But I’m gonna get the back issues of the articles on the 64 & 71 soon. But appreciate you and everyone involved on this mist valuable subject of Winchester’s, in American History!

And oh yes, I saw the YouTube video by Mark??, the Cinnabar, and that’s when  I determined to join.

Welcome! I too came here from the Cinnabar videos, I’d visited before but looked at it differently after I saw a few of those…great guy, even ended up talking to him on the phone and bought a rifle

…there’s some great people in here and it’s been one of the most welcoming online communities I’ve ever been a part of. Learned a LOT in the last couple of years.
