Squirrel hunting with a .405; got to try that!  But actually well written, with what appears to be accurate & reasonable ballistic info, such as reporting 7″ groups at 150 yds.

Good article.  I particularly enjoyed the fact that the .280 Ross was mentioned.

I liked the part, where with the .405 ,he shot a dozen cones in succession off a hemlock tree.Hemlock cones are not very big,so I would say that was mighty good shooting to do with a .405, that is not suppose to be very accurate.Smile

And here I thought I was breaking new ground with my .405. I have 20 cases loaded with black powder and ready to go. 77gr of Goex cartridge with a 20 to 1 home cast bullet with a gas check lubed with SPG/DGL mix. I think it weighs 280gr or so. Unfortunately, I haven’t had time to shoot these loads. I had in mind the old 40 72 when I came up with my BP loads for the .405.

My 95 has a shotgun butt and a climin lyman peep, so it’s pretty near the ultimate hunting gun.

Yes the article sure did have some very different idea on what to use in the .405 and what to use it on.

Cannot say that I have ever heard of any one using black powder in the .405 before.Be sure to let us know how you make out with your .405 black powder loads,Brooksy.

This was a very fun article.

I recall hearing old-timers talk about the .405.  The word was, “you can eat right up to the bullet hole.”

I have a memory of having a conversation with my Grandfather over 50 years ago – about the .405.  I mentioned I wanted one.  He was not in favor of the idea – but had never used one either.  I can still recall him smiling and chuckling at the idea.
