In the last episode, I chose a deluxe 1895 rifle to hunt deer with this season.  The old “flatside” shot a pretty darn good group on paper.  Join me for this episode to see if it’ll put meat on the table as well.  Mark

Great hunt.  Right out in your back yard.

All this talking about the 95’s has me wanting to shoot my flat side in 30-40.  I’m going to take it to the range on Tuesday.

Congrats on your buck.  Great hunt to capture on video with a super cool rifle.  You know, two quakey branches to length and some electrical tape make a pretty decent set of po-boy shooting sticks if you didnt already have a set Wink

Couldnt remember what type of bullet you were using (lead hard or soft cast, or jacketed bullet).  Was curious about what bullet and the type of expansion observed.  Ive shot multiple deer and also hogs with my 38-55 using hard cast bullets and there isnt much expansion.  Switched to soft cast mixture of 20:1 and 30:1 lead:tin in the hopes of getting more expansion if it doesnt hit and shatter bone.  Have also thought about having my mold altered to cast a hollow point bullet, but havent got there yet.  Want to try these out this year on a deer.  Have shot a few hogs and the expansion was gauged at about 30-35% or so of the original bullet diameter.

Just returned from a muley hunt in SW Wyoming (near Evanston) last week.  Was a great experience but hard on an old boy who’s fat, out of shape, and lives 200 feet above sea level.  Took a couple days to get acclimated to the elevation.  Shot a nice 5×5 with an inherited rifle from my best friend and hunting buddy of 30+ years who passed away several years ago. While its not an old Winchester (Original Rem Sendero in 7MM Rem Mag) it got the job done.

Shot my 1895 in 30 US today.  At 100 yds it shoots at least a foot high. Windage is not bad.  I lowered the front of the gun to where the front sight barely could be seen it in the rear v notch.  Maybe if I take the rear sight out and use the flat of the barrel?  Factory Win ammo with 180 gr. bullets shot in the mid 2,300’s.  I have no idea how much taller the front blade needs to be for 12″ of drop.

Chuck, here is a pretty good article or whatever you want to call it, about how to get a proper front sight.  This came from Marbles and does include math and such but it’s pretty simple, use a cheap digital caliper to get the measurements too.

Hope this helps you out.

Eric, thanks for the chart.  I will make up something to make my sight blade taller and see how it works.  I will have to double what the chart says to get the 12″ or so that I need.

I used Eric’s chart and figured out what height I thought would work.  I cut a piece of a spray can nozzle tube and taped it to the top of the sight.  It worked great.  Now I am hitting the target at 50 yds.  I played with different holds so I got a spray of shots.  The Win Factory ammo is not the best according to my chronograph.  Shots ranged from 2322 FPS to 2396 FPS.

Chuck, I am glad it worked and I could be of some use.  I am sure a lot of factory ammo is considered “ok” if it’s with in 100fps from shot to shot.
