Does anyone out there know the case length 45-60 brass needs to be trimmed?  Also, what is the maximum overall cartridge length with bullet?

Thanks

Chris

According to Cartridges of the World, the .45-60 Winchester case length is 1.89" and, as written in the book, the cartridge length is 2.15(?).  The ? Is written by the author, Frank C Barnes.

Chris, On page 136 of Houze's book he has a pen and ink elevational  drawing dated Feb. 1, 1918. It says case length 1.855 to 1.89, overall length 2.245 to 2.255. I have always trimmed my brass to 1.87 and overall to 2.25. T/R

Thanks mvcvs for looking that up.

TR--  I had totally forgot about that being in Houze book.  Thanks for reminding me.  I think Im having trouble with my bullet length (nose to crimp groove).  The 45-60 cases are trimmed to 1.85".  The bullet I was going to try to use is one that I have for my 45-90 that drops a 338 grn bullet at .459".  Problem is when seated the nose of the bullet is too long, coming in at a whopping 2.35" OACL if seated in to a 1.85" trimmed case.  Made my first round yesterday thinking there wouldnt be an issue, it chambered fine but when I tried to eject the cartridge the nose of the bullet would hang up on the end of the chamber.  Had to take the sideplates and links out to get cartridge back out. Guess i would have to trim those cases back to 1.75" to get it to 2.25" OACL with the bullet I currently have or find a shorter nose bullet.    The current mould I have is the Lyman #457122

Thanks,

Chris

Don't trim the cases....Seat the bullet deeper.  Make sure to not compress the load.

Chuck you nailed it, was talking to a friend discussing and your right, wasnt seating my bullet far enough Embarassed.  I had tried to crimp at the top of the last grease groove instead of a little deeper and above the bullet ring.  Chambers and extracts fine now.   Using BP and not smokeless.

Hello Chris , glad to see that you are loading some 45-60 WCF  ammo . I read through your post and remembered that I had sent you some 45-60 WCF bullets that I had cast in my original Winchester mould . Did you ever get a chance to load them ?If so how did they work for you ? Enjoy shooting the 76 .                                                                                                    DT

DT--I havent shot those yet, I stashed them away somewhere and need to find and get them loaded up.  Definitely will load some up soon and try them out.  I was trying to work up some 45-90 rounds  and experienced some issues with the sizing die (have contacted Lyman about the problem) so I decided while I was at it I would load some of the 45-60 rounds.  I purchased a mould a couple months ago and had cast some bullets for the 45-90, since my sizing die was problematic I instead used them to load some 45-60.  Im using Swiss 1 1/2 with vegetable fiber wad.  The bullets I have drop at .459 and weigh 338 grns on average and are 20:1 Lead/tin.  Here are some of the loaded cartridges.

Targets werent too bad at 50 yards considering my eyesight.   The sights with the 26" barrel rifle arent the best for me to see but could sure put the hurt on something at a short distance. Shooting out of my 30" barrel rifle they shot pretty good once I settled in on the sights better after the first 2 shots.  However, adjustments have to be made on both to get them zeroed in a bit better.  Both shot a bit high and to the left.  Sun was to my right so that may have had something to do with it.

I was hoping to shoot a few more today.
