Just wondering if an X stamped after a S/N has any significance?

This is a Win. 71

The X suffix after a S/N was used by Winchester to indicate a duplicate serial number

The “X” was hand stamped.  That Model 71 rifle is one of seven that I have documented thus far.

Hi Bert-

I know we’ve touched base on this before, but in your surveys do you have any/many Winchesters (any Model) with the “X” suffix denoting a duplicate fro before WWII?  Not to say that Winchester never had accidental s/n duplications earlier, just asking about how they denoted them…

Reason I ask is that in the M70 survey, I now have (5) with a “D” prefix, ALL between s/n D8690 and D8740.  I have others in that range that lack the prefix but (so far) have not seen the same s/n +/- the “D” which would suggest that the prefix was a pre-war way of denoting “duplicate”…

Thhanks,

Lou

Lou,

I do indeed have a very small number of Pre-WW II “X” suffixed Winchesters in my surveys.  The earliest is a Model 94 s/n 1261417X (PR date January 10, 1941).  It also has the “W” stamp indicating the Du-light Bluing test.

So does that add any more value if they have that x after the serial number , my cousin has this model 94 with one ?Screenshot_20261006-213113.Moto-App-Launcher.png

I would pay a significant premium for the pair (or triplets) of the original number + the ones with the “X”s…..just sayin.  Laugh

But standalone with an “X” is no premium for me.

No it does not, especially for a Model 94.  Currently, I have (75) “X” marked Model 94s in my survey.

Which caliber is your cousin’s Model 94?

Thanks, Bert!!!

The earliest “X” suffix M70 I’ve found to date (not counting the odd R&D gun) is s/n 75829X (1947).

Those “D” prefix M70s perplex me.  Besides the (4) in the clip below, there’s s/n D8702 that RatRod Mac recently ran across.  There’s nothing at all “special” about these guns, and you can see that there are numbers in-between that lack the prefix.  These are the only “D” serial numbers out of about (24,000) in the survey and they’re in a block of (50) or so…

D-prefix-Serial-Numbers.png

I’ve wondered if maybe the guy stamping M70 serial numbers on a Friday in 1937 forgot to record the last number he used, causing the next guy on Monday to start in the wrong place and stamp a whole block of duplicates?  I asked Pauline Muerrle to check the original PR logbook for 8690 through 8740, but there’s nothing there to indicate duplications (or explain the “D”).

Which raises another question… How many M70 receivers were actually made?  We know s/n 1 was stamped on Jan 20, 1936 and the last number used, 581,471, was stamped on Oct 18, 1963.  But “X” serial numbers are not rare, and it doesn’t appear that the factory “skipped” the next number to keep the count accurate.  For example, I have s/n 422990X.  If there was a 422989, 422990, 422990X, and 422991, then there’s one more M70 receiver out there than there were serial numbers used.  In the M70 survey, it appears to me that the number of “X” serial numbers may be as high as 1 in 500 to 1 in 1000, which would suggest (600) to (1200) more than 581,471 M70 receivers were made.

Hmmmmm… Confused

Lou

Lou,

I suspect that there were at least 1,500 duplicate serial numbered model 94s that were manufactured.  I have one serial number that appears to have a triplicate… 2138903XX.

This is the complete list of all the Model 94/64 duplicate “X” serial numbers I have found thus far.

I have found NO Model 1892’s or Model 61’s with an “X” suffix at the serial number.

I have found Model 75’s and Model 77’s from the mid-late 1950’s with the “X”.  I do not have a survey of the Model 77 so I can’t give you statistics but I have seen at least a dozen duplicates over the years for that model.

Below is an example of a Model 77 with a duplicate number.

The practice of stamping the “X” began shortly after production of the Model 92 ended.  There is at least one Model 65 out there with it though, serial number 1006320X (1941 production).

I have (9) Model 43 rifles documented thus far with “X” marked serial numbers (from a total of (2,198). Here are several of them’

I also have found a small number of late production Model 97 Shotguns with the “X“
