I recently acquired a Winchester model 70. Pre 64 and 30-06. It has markings on it that I believe are DOD Acceptance stamps.
It looks like an eagle with three stars over it. Also is a badge glued to the stock that says
Property of recreation fund, 4th Marine division.
I was hoping someone could help me identify some history with this, or what it was used for. Thank you
If nothing turning up here, likely hit or miss in ability to get a detailed & specific answer. Nomenclature “badge”, quite likely equivalent of what is now military: MWR -Morale, Welfare & Recreation services. Such rifle evidently available to Marine checkout for ‘recreational use’. The “stars”, etc., not sounding familiar or military, but who knows considering half century or more ago!
Myself military retired, not Marine. But wife Catholic Mass choir soloist, Marine Corp Memorial Chapel, Camp Pendleton. Family hooks with Corp there. IF YOU CAN POST SOME PHOTOS, can check with some of the ‘old timers’ to see if such stamp ringing any bells and advise if any positive recollections. (War stories not included!) Good luck and…
My take

The Eagle and stars is a DoD acceptance stamp.
I know the 1st Marine Div. at Camp Pendleton had a program where you could check out sporting equipment such as rifles, shotguns and even scuba equipment. Big Larry’s housing quarters were under the Gunny that ran the program and can attest to the plethora of toys the 1st had. I am sure the 4th probably had the same program.
The DoD stamp is a mystery since that only would have been applied by the in-plant Military inspector, and only during Korea and ‘Nam production as far as I know. It was not applied during arsenal overhauls or refurbs. What is the serial number/vintage of the rifle? The 1st Mar Div. bought a lot of stuff in the late ’40’s, early ’50’s.
Would love to see pictures!
