OfflineMy father was an avid Winchester collector. The bug did not bite me until he passed away several years ago. I’m grateful for the many seeds he planted in my life. This Winchester seed is borderline obsessive and likely will soon cross the line!
The attached pics show a model 1866 he acquired in the late 1960’s. I acquired a letter for it in 2020. Recently while going through some of dad’s old books I came across a letter for the same rifle acquired in 1966…included in the pics.
4th model in well used condition. it is still rimfire. Close inspection of the receiver shows that someone used steel wool or some other abrasive many, many years ago. Dad always said the unique feature of this gun is the 28″ barrel…which is shown in the letter.
My question: How rare is the 28″ barrel in the model 1866?

OfflineAn extra length barrel on a 1866 rifle is rare, to have one that letters is rare, rare. The fact that the forearm cap is brass on a fourth model this late does not bother me.
I’m sure you will be contacted by at least one long barrel collector willing to put a dollar value on it.
Casey Nanz used to have a standing wanted add in the Winchester Magazine for 66 long or short barrels. 812-221-6533

OfflineI have a 66 database from a old collector and forwarded Casey the long barrelled information years ago and checking it I have 13 in 26″, 15 in 28″, 4 in 30″, 1 32″ and 1 36″. Your gun is not in it so there are 16 28″ 66’s.
