Hello,
First post so my apologies. I recently inherited a Model 54 carbine and leather scabbard. The original owner lived in Wyoming and I’m assuming possibly a cattle rancher. The stock is in decent shape except for the fact it may have been cut and a different butt plate put on. It has the original Lyman rear sight that from what I can gather is a model 48W. First thing I did was have a gunsmith check it out. All was well with good rifling and headspace okay to fire. Took it to the range and made a group about the size of a quarter at 25yds. but 6in. high. Tried it at 50yds and went over the target even with the sight all the way down as far as it will go.??? First time that has ever happened to me. Not sure what’s up with it. Front sight looks original and untouched?? So, not sure what to do with it at this point. Lyman no longer makes the front sights like this one with a pin through it and I’m finding that stocks and parts for this gun are rare after a lot of searching on the net. Seems like a hassel to restore it at this point and not sure what to do with it. The scabbard is another question. I don’t know if it may be of any value other than a wall hanger since I don’t have a horse etc. The only id I see is the number 8 stamped on the side near the top. I haven’t spent much time researching it yet. Another problem I have is the proper way to adjust the Lyman sight. I wrote to Lyman and was told they no longer have the directions for that sight although they sent me the closest thing they had but seems quite different. Batting zero all around with gun, stock, sight and scabbard. Sorry for the long post but any help, ideas etc. would be more than I have now.
Thanks,
Jim
