Good Afternoon,
I bought a Winchester Model 3 .22 Caliber Automatic yesterday, manufactured in 1930. My question is, what is the difference between a Model 3 and a Model 1903? Is it just the difference in chambering from the Winchester specific .22 Automatic versus the .22 LR or SR chambering?
The Model 1903 and “03” are exactly the same rifle and use the same 22 Win Auto cartridge. In the year 1919, Winchester changed all of their Model designations from a 4-digit (year) to a 2-digit (year)… e.g. the Model 1890 became the “90”, the Model 1894 became the “94”, etc.
When Winchester dropped the Model 03 and introduced the Model 63, that is when the cartridge chambering was updated to the 22 LR.
