James,
Winchester offered factory nickel plated finish as a special order option for the Model 1905, but it was very rare. If the serial number is < 29079, you can have it lettered by the Cody Firearms Museum records office, and that letter will tell you if it was nickel plated.

the serial number on this rifle is lower (278xxx)
thank you for the information
I’ve been told that law enforcement agencies may have made special orders for this
and most were somewhat unused and kept in storage
i can see that possibility but of course i don’t know
i have come with nothing on the nickel plating till now
any more you can tell me is also welcome
It was the Model 1907 that was ordered for Police & Prison Guard use (also military use). The Model 1905 might have seen very limited orders and use by Police agencies, but I am unaware of any.
We frown on the use of “xxx” when posting serial numbers.
