That attempt at changing the number sure wouldn’t fool anyone.
It’s almost at the point where there’s too much risk to participate in GunBroker auctions and that’s a shame as I’m sure the majority of sellers are honest.
I hope you get this resolved Richard.

I guess I will disagree some with the statements about GB. I have bought and sold quite a few firearms on GB and only was ripped once. There was red flags, but I bid anyway and got scammed big time…turned out to be around $1600.00 worth. In my opinion, most of the sellers are dishonest, or will at least take advantage of a buyer if they can, and not the other way around. One has to learn to look at pictures, descriptions, feedback, AND ask questions and see what kind of answers you get. It’s almost a science it seems. I also would hesitate to purchase with a no return, but have found that if you ask the seller about returns, they will ok it. Maybe in the case of the OP, one should have asked him….”aaah, what if I get it and the serial # has been ground off and another one stamped in it’s place…would you allow a return? Just kidding of course, but I have asked if I get the item and it has “a problem that is not shown or described”, will you allow a return? If there’s a problem, you probably will not get a reply. I do think GB should make it’s sellers more accountable, especially in cases like this. With the info/pictures that the OP has, I think GB should revoke his privileges until he makes it right, but I doubt that will happen. Wonder if OP has contacted GB about the issue?? Peter

Bert……….. That can’t be the only place a serial number was stamped. I don’t know much about 95’s but certainly there must be someplace else the original serial number was stamped.
Len
Len,
Winchester only marked the serial number in just one location on most of their various models, including the Model 1895.

Thanks guys, the seller did post “no returns”, however I think that this is outright fraud, and that should statement should not apply in this case. Also, I think selling a gun with an altered serial number could be a problem with the ATF. I have no way of knowing if this rifle was stolen at some point.
In my latest email to the seller, I told him I have no choice but to report this to the AFT in Jacksonville Florida where he lives.

Dick,
Your response to the seller is exactly correct. You also need to report it to GB’s auction support. If you need “expert” testimony in support of your complaint to GB, get in touch with me at [email protected]. Make sure that you tell GB that the seller sold you a firearm with an altered serial number, which is in violation of federal law.

Bert, I really appreciate your help in this. Hopefully the seller will realize that sending me back my money is the right thing to do. I will keep this topic updated as I get new information.
