I am trying to determine the calibre of a winchester model 1895, serial number 62097.  On the front face of the receiver is stamped “33”.  There are no other markings on the barrel or receiver.

Dwayne,

Have you removed the forend stock and inspected the underside of the barrel? Winchester did not omit the caliber/cartridge marking on the barrel.

Sure what you see isn’t 35, which might make it .35 WCF.  Still doesn’t explain lack of brl. markings; either it’s been rebarreled or the original markings have been polished off.

Hi Bert,

I did remove the firestorm and that’s when I saw the “33” stamped on the front face of the receiver.  The barrel does have the Winchester trademark at the very top.

Can you post a link to clear pictures of your Model 1895?

Hey Bert,

I tried to post a link to pics but I must have done something wrong because it didn’t make it to this thread.

Is there anyway to determine the calibre from the serial number?

I found a website that could tell me ser#  62097 was manufactured in 1908 but that is all the info I have found so far.

Unfortunately, the factory records for all Model 1895 serial numbers > 59999 are no longer in existence, so No, there is no way to determine what the original caliber was from a serial number. That stated, Winchester marked the caliber/cartridge chambering on the top of the barrel and the underside of the barrels. If you remove the forend stock, you should see the caliber marking.
