I’ve got a model 1873 Winchester lever action. Serial number is- 92901 A. I think it’s a 44. Not sure. It’s in working order. Any thoughts??? It says [email protected], *typo* change s to an A. avera

If its not marked it probably a 44 or its a worn 38 or if you post a picture I can tell from the receiver shape.

All early 1873’s were 44’s.  They started adding the caliber when the 38 WCF was added to the line.  I would have to look up the date/serial number this occurred.

Actually by the time Trent’s gun came out the 32 caliber was just coming out so it could of be any caliber and they continued producing the 44 with no caliber mark while marking the 38’s.

Bob, that is interesting.  I have never heard this before.  Could have been a little confusing.

There are plenty of old guns out there with no caliber markings, or it’s in a not to obvious place. I have an old Colt that is marked on the side of the trigger guard. A single shot rifle in .44-40 with no caliber marks. A 76 Winchester that iirc is marked on the rear sight.

Yes there are.  I like the guns that are marked Calibre 1873 or any of the Colt large frame slide action rifles.   Both examples are ways of not saying they shoot a Winchester caliber.
