I am looking for information on a Model 1866 serial number 47972.  This piece was recently offered and sold through Collectors Firearms in Houston Texas. I am working a project for the Provenance/history of this firearm.  Does anyone have information on who has owned this in the past or is this serial number referenced in any documentation?

Thanks for any assistance

Dennis

I assume you have contacted Collector firearms to see if they will give you where they got it from. I check my records and the carbine was sold through Butterfield & Butterfield auction back in January of 1997. I don’t know if they are still in business or not but the auction catalogs do show up on Ebay which may show the collector that had it.

Bob,

Thank you for the information, I have not yet called Collectors Firearms.  Last time on a different research project they were not willing to share the information.  I will search for the Butterfield & Butterfield records.  Let me know if anyone comes up with any additional information.

Ask them if they will contact the seller and see if he will contact you.

Dennis,

I have a lot of auction catalogs, Little John’s, RIA, James Julia and Poulin’s but didn’t think I had a Butterfield catalog but looked anyway and I happens the one catalog I have is the Jan 97 one. so here is the gun in the PDF. I don’t know if a PDF will upload so if it doesn’t contact me at the below email address.

Sold for $2070

GOOD LUCK! I have tried the exact same thing about an 86 a couple years ago and they just stone walled me. Sorry to say you will get nothing out of them or any company where you may have purchased.

Yeah, I have tried on several other occasions with Collectors Firearms to research and converse with them about reaching out to the previous owners for history information and they stone walled me as well!  They don’t seem to be very cooperative when it comes to sharing provenance history.  It is a shame because provenance on these historic treasures is the fun of it!  Thanks for everyone’s assistance!

Bob,

I spoke with Bonhams regarding the records from the 1997 auction and they do not have the detailed records.  They only have the catalog references.  So there were no details available.  They also indicated, as many other companies do, that they do not disclose buyer/seller information.  It makes it difficult to research provenance.
