I recently acquired a Winchester 92 rifle, with a 24” octagon barrel. It is chambered in 25-20, and is a takedown version. Based on the serial number I see that it was made in 1909. There is no marking to indicate that it a model 92, I had thought that the top strap would have model 92, or 1892, stamped on it but instead it states “REG. IN US PAT. OFF., – WINCHESTER -, TRADE MARK“.
The most remarkable thing about this Winchester, is that the blue is in at least 95-97% condition, with no flaking, and the wood is about 95% condition, with one dent on the forearm, that I am sure I can steam out.
I’m hoping that someone in the group can tell me more about this Winchester. Thank you
Dave
The 92s with this upper tang marking will rarely be found. It is the export model. They appear between sn’s 437920 and 522162, but ony for export.
If you look very close you will see (mod 1892) just behind the hammer on the upper tang running 90deg’s to the tang marking.
Their may be british proof marks on the barrel.
picture’s would help. most of the export 92s came to Australia, they are not common but show up from time to time.I have a couple in my collection.
Sounds like you have a nice collectable 92.
I don’t want to be the bearer of bad news but your rifle has been refinished, hence the 95% blueing. If you look closely at the complete picture of the top tang you will see the remnants of the letter M, (just behind the hammer) The model designation has been polished off and the rifle has been reblued. There are several other obvious indicators that it has been reblued also…..

I just took a couple of hasty pictures of the marking on mine (also a .25-20)
Unfortunately, yes, your rifle has been reblued.
Seems to me we’ve had one (or more) threads on these 1892’s. I seem to recall that maybe these rifles weren’t made for export or at all, but it was perhaps to address a production mistake Winchester made in not marking the tang with the model number? Maybe someone here knows where one of those threads are.
