I have a modle 92 in 218b the receiver and barrel both are stanped 218b and modle 91 the top of the barrel and receiver have a pw in a circule stamped in them . On the bottom of the barrel uner the forarm is stamped 218s 50 . serial # is 985498 . can anyone tell me anything about this gun?. Thanks
Dan,
Something is very strange if the receiver is stamped “218B”. Winchester marked the caliber on the barrel only on all of their lever-action models. The serial number you mention indicates that the receiver is a Model 92, and that it was manufactured in 1929. The “50” you found on the bottom of the barrel is a date (year) stamp, and it strongly indicates that it is a Model 43 barrel. Based on survey I have, your Winchester was originally a Model 92 Rifle made for the 25-20 WCF cartridge. At some point in time after it was manufactured, it was converted (rebarreled) to 218 Bee (after 1950). There is no way to know if the work was accomplished by Winchester, or by an outside shop.

No, but all of the serial numbers in close proximity to it (both before and after) are Model 92 Rifles in 25-20 WCF. Winchester tended to make them in batches of the same caliber. Further, a Model 92 in 38 WCF or 44 WCF cannot be readily converted to the 218 Bee cartridge.

Hello Dan,
Can you send me some photos of the rifle and the stamped writing markings on the barrel and receiver. I have cataloged more than 13,000 Model 1892/92 rifles and would like to add your into the data base. My email is [email protected]
Thanks
