Hi, new member here, longtime gun collector.  I got this Winchester 1906 the other day, and the guy said it came in this box when he got it.  It’s a 1919 by serial number.  The box has me wondering, did Winchester ever use boxes like this, or is it just something someone had?  Under the lid’s modern foam rubber someone put in, there are remnants of a label.  You can only read one word, barely: “Quality”.  The rest is torn off.  There look like there were two things glued in the lid on the two sides beside the label.  The hardware is mostly steel, screws flat tip, steel.  What is it?  Thanks!

No factory-made box, or the boxes made by accessory makers, would be built without partitions to separate the different components.

What if they were there at one time, but removed?  Like I said, the foam rubber looks about 5 years old, the rest of the box about 100.  And something was inside it in the past, but removed.  Perhaps partitions or such.  Just asking is there any comparable cases, boxes, or crates out there for Winchester take downs that I can look at to see if this could have been one, before being partially pulled apart?

Well, who can say that’s impossible?  But don’t you think it’s a bit improbable if both the box & the gun remained together?  I mean, why would anyone do that, unless they intended to break them up?  What I’d do with the box is study some period cases, & make my own partitions, cover them with felt, etc.; not to pass it off as “original” (impossible), but just to make use of a nice box.

Thanks, I will keep the box with the gun, the old timer said he had.  I’ve found people often keep things a long time in situ.  The .22 could have been kept in a trunk, or workshop in that box without the foam of course, since the original owner had it.  Or not.  My main question was is THIS any kind of box ever seen with Winchester 1906 takedowns?  Because I’ve found very strange things, original things, at estate sales.  I’ve got a 1864 telescope in it’s original packing crate.  I bought a pen and pencil set and looked at the bottom of the clamshell case: 1918, original box.  I’ve got a lot of old mid-century cameras with original boxes.  I came here for winchester expertise to see if THIS box is anything seen before?  If not, I’ll assume it was just a tool box someone repurposed.
