Hi, my first time on forum so apologies if I dont use correct format. I am located in Australia and recently purchased a Winchester 1895 (I was told it was made around 1915) serial # 793.. range.
It is a .405 cal and is a factory takedown that looks fairly original but with a new version of the period Lyman peep sight (Providence company) and a Winchester recoil pad that was replaced a couple of years ago at some cost – it had the same pad on before but it had deteriorated badly over such a long time.
Stock was not cut etc, just fitted where old one was by one of the top gunsmiths here, who also owned the rifle for many years himself.
My intent is to gently use it as a retro hog hunting rig and then keep it as the start of a collection of Winchester original period lever guns, especially takedowns.
If anyone knows more about this rifle it would be appreciated.
Welcome Graham,
You might want to pick up the Winchester model 1895 book, that a couple well known WACA, members, (Rob Kassab, Brad Dunbar), put together, a few years ago. You can’t go wrong with it, and the knowledge and information in their book is worth while!

Best of luck to you in finding a copy.

Steve, yes that is the one from Cleavers, I have been drooling and haggling for a few months, eventually got 240 rounds of Winchester factory ammo so will see if I can destroy some pigs

Anthony, yes I would love a copy of it, just very hard to find except at $550 which makes me keep the wallet closed 🙂

I was looking at that 1895 for a while but when ready to buy it was gone! looks like its gone to a good home!…..I found one later a 405 with shotgun butt , steel checkered, and with factory express sights and it has British proofs made in 1911, probably used in India as a Tiger rifle…..after a Take Down next!
As I am much more of a collector than a shooter these days, if it were mine, I would find an original Lyman No. 21 sight for it – and try to match the level of blue wear on the sight to the level of wear on the receiver. I believe this could be done with a bit of persistence. For me, it would make a very large aesthetic difference.

Hopefully it has found a good home 🙂 seems you found a lovely one with a likely fascinating history.

Steve, yes I agree, I have my eyes open for an original, but they are scarce as… 🙂
