Hello All,
I’m new here; I inherited a Winchester 1894 Hex barrel from my dad, who got it from a friend of his 40 or 50 years ago. I’m trying to get more information about it, I may put it up in my house on display or I possibly may sell it, but that’s a big maybe due to the sentimental value to me.
The Serial number is 135508
Thanks
Mark
First, off: WELCOME to WACA!
Your 1894 rifle was made in 1901. The sling swivels are a post-factory addition. And it’s a small point, but the barrel is octagon, not hexagon, as it has eight (not six) sides. It shows much honest use, and I expect it still has what it takes to bring home the venison.

This is a great honest rifle handed down to you, that you can really enjoy. A great representative of and early good honest hunting rifle, in a caliber that has probably taken more venison than any other caliber of all time. Keeping it like it is as all original is nice to see. The rifle has great character that many of us like to see.
Thanks for sharing.

For most of us here, if a family heirloom like that was handed down to us, we never let it go. As Anthony points out, it is an honest rifle. It surely has many stories to tell – very satisfying for a rifle that has been handed down. The octagon barrel aspect adds to it’s iconic Winchester aura.
Welcome and thanks for sharing. This forum is a great place to learn and has a number of experts that are very generous with their knowledge sharing…and very patient too with us newbies.
If you enjoy reading and have not found your way to this post and book yet, it is a wealth of knowledge:

You might also consider ordering a Cody letter. Your s/n is early enough that they will have factory records confirming the original configuration and providing its “birth” and ship dates. Keep or sell, having the letter should add value to your rifle.

I will add there are individual articles (that I researched and wrote) covering the Models 55 and 64, and a new article covering the Model 94 will be published sometime next year. I collaborated with Bob Renneberg for the Models 55 and 64 in his books.
