I can’t tell by the pics but that gun may not necessarily been shortened, even though the site and the magazine band seem to be misplaced I believe they made 6, 23″ rifles that letter, I had an engraved one, and who knows how many they made after. I would have to do all the measurements on it and check the machining to form an opinion. What ser# range and is it a short 8 3/8″ forestock, what cal. , does it have a tang site?

Good morning,Absolutely cut down! Regardless of the barrel length, or style, the front sight and magazine retaining band should be positioned as in the attached photos.

Michael, thank you for the clear pictures.
So is it safe to say that all sporting rifle configuration 1894s have a retaining band that is (3 5/8” ?) on center from the face of the muzzle, even in special order lengths?

The serial number is 563530.
I’ll get better measurements tonight for reference.
I imagine it’s been cut, but I’m not an 1894 efficianado by any stretch.
All input and insight is appreciated!
thanks

Joel,
That is correct. I have 2 of those 6, 23 inch barreled 1894’s but each has a shorter than full length magazine!! I have a few 22 inch, full length magazine 1892’s and 1894’s and the magazine retaining ring is positioned as shown in the photos.

I bought a 1894 23″ barrel deluxe from one of my wife’s relatives at deer camp in Michigan’s U.P. It was 1/2 octagon, full magazine, pistol grip, SB, checkered, 30WCF, and all original. S/N 183894 lettered correct and I like a fool sold during a weak moment to a fellow 94 collector. I can’t tell from my old photo’s how long the forearm was, it’s been over ten years and I can’t remember. T/R
