That is a very nice looking Model 1892 Rifle . I was unaware of a serial number gap in the ledger records somewhere in the 344000 – 344500 range.
So was I!
Here’s the serial number ranges for the 1892:
• 1-344149 (W & SNA)
• 345050-374850 (W & SNA)
• 376149-379999 (W & SNA)
• 380000-917240 (SNA)
• 1006822-1007608 (SNA)
Here’s mine:
According to the above, 344,310 is in a range where not only a letter cannot be had, but supposedly no SNA date, either, but Jesi was able to provide that:
WINCHESTER MODEL 1892 – SERIAL NUMBER 344310
Serial number applied on July 28, 1906
No configuration information available
Gap in records from SN 344150 thru 345049
Bert, it sure sounds like a survey of these non letterable dates may be necessary.😄

Michael (2bit) is actively surveying all of the Model 1892s.
That is a sizeable gap in the warehouse ledger records (900 serial numbers). Based on my past research, No serial number gaps exist in the SNA records anywhere in the 300000 – 400000 range. The SNA records at the CFM are complete for all serial numbers in the 1 – 917240 range. It is my understanding that Pauline M. has the SNA records covering the 917241+ serial numbers.

Ian – that’s a darn nice rifle! I like everything about it.
The features remind me of a .25-20 I have here. Pistol grip, grip cap, uncheckered wood, shotgun butt, round barrel.
Does this one have a letter?
Yes, it is quite a bit earlier – 179,000 range. Letter states made 1-25-02 and shipped 1-27-02 on order #130752. “Plain” trigger, “plain wood with pistol grip, shotgun butt, rubber buttplate”; caliber 25-20, rifle, half-octagon.”

Very nice Ian, a smooth PG is uncommon, if I have termed that correctly. Here is a smooth PG carbine I have in 32wcf. Also have an 86 smooth PG in 33wcf, I like them alot as I don’t see them often
Tom,
That’s a nice carbine!
I also have an 1886 with a pistol grip and no checkering and it’s in .45-70!
Those are some great 92’s that you guy’s are sharing! The letters verifying always is a nice added touch. I also agree, with the hard to find plain pistol grip, and or the checkered pistol grip, in a Deluxe version, also being hard to find. My point being, even though none are the checkered Deluxe version, there isn’t a serious collector in the group that would turn any of those down, Especially in the condition that you guys have shared. Rarity absolutely comes to mind, with all of them. You just don’t see them, that often. Thanks again for sharing.

Okay I’ll bite! LOL!
What is it Steve? I could guess, as a few ideas are in my head.

Tony –
I was speculating that no one would guess it’s actually a M1894 SRC (and .32 Special at that ):
I like this large style shotgun butt a lot on this carbine. It’s interesting how similar in dimensions it is to the larger rifle (the M1886). I suspect most thought it was just another M1886 in the photo.

Steve,That’s a great representation. For a 94 Carbine to be in that condition, is always desirable. Pretty neat in the .32 Special Caliber also.
I like it!

Tony, glad you like it. Remember, the .32 Special fan club here is not overflowing with members. But that said, we’re always looking for new recruits! I seriously like this carbine a whole lot better in .32 Special than were it in .30 WCF.
