Looking at a Winchester 1892 deluxe checkered pistol grip takedown in 25/20 made in 1909. My question is on the left inside of the lower tang should it be marked with X’s for good wood used.
Does it have H-pattern or I-pattern checkering? Winchester used what was referred to as “select” grain wood for the early production Take Down rifles, and they usually do not have an “X” or “XX” marked on the lower tang.

H pattern Bert. would Cody have any records being made in 1909?
Unfortunately, No they do not. The factory ledger records for the Model 1892 end at serial number 379999 (April 4th, 1907). Per the Polishing Room records, the year 1909 began with serial number 471653. While some earlier production serial numbers (pre 379999) may have been received in the warehouse in 1909, they are not 1909 guns.
Serial numbers 380000+ cannot be lettered.

IF you can post images and the SN of the rifle I will be happy to take a look at it. I have seen just over 22,500 individual Model 1892’s in the past 15 years while working on my research survey. I may have seen that rifle previously.

I did happen to have it listed already from an old auction catalog. Sounds like a nice rifle for sure. Winchester was making a lot of T/D’s in that SN range.

So lets see a picture of this beauty Tony….
unfortunatly, Chris i traded for a delux 73 , quite a few yrs ago to a friend, (stupid me ) and he still has it, but it has never been on the net, thats why im curious as to where Michael had seen it from an auction sight. I bought it in 1979 for $300, off a friend in sydney who owned it for yrs. I can trace the history back over 50yrs. so if it was in an auction it would of been in the 60s.

Tony,
My mistake I think. I had the rifle “listed” as being in Australia but as you can tell from my spreadsheet there is not information regarding the caliber stamp, proof marks, barrel address, upper tang or sights. Nor did I have WACA or your name associated with it. Years ago an AU collectors sent me some images of old AU auction listings so I assumed that was where I had gotten the info.

As those with a keen interest in the Model 1892 already know, a checkered variation which is original, correct, has condition and letters is a rare speciman. They are not as hard to find as a deluxe 53 or 55 but the good one’s have been tucked away in collections.
PURE BEAUTY RIGHT THERE!
I don’t see how people can pay big dollars on art, such as paintings, when items like this exist. As I said, pure beauty.
Burt – you collected some really find rifles over the years. I always enjoy seeing them. Always nearly unbearable eye candy. There’s this sin out there called envy, and I am surely not free of it.
