I am trying to determine the rarity of a matted barrel in model 1886 and also the rarity of a 1/2 Octagon matted barrel in model 1886.

I can’t find anything in Madl

Thanks

According to Chatgpt  there were 206 in the model 1886.  There were 10 in 50-100-450. 2 were matted in 36″ 1886 50-100-450.  Others will chime in, but ledger space may have been an issue–Bill

I guess I never would have thought chatgpg would know anything about Winchester production numbers. Heck I don’t even know how to talk to chatgpt !!!

I can barely write this response as my tablet keeps writing whatever it wants instead Yell

206 matted barrel 86’s (all calibers) is correct – the Summer 2007 Winchester Collector has an article discussing it.

Late to the party here, but I wanted to chime in. According to Madl and Hawk they have just over 3100 half rounds listed. I have seen approximately a dozen matt barreled 86’s and own exactly one. I will say that of the ones I have seen, both in person and for sale on various “forums” 2 were full octagon, 1 was round and the rest half round. I know this means nothing but, given that it seems as if people buying matt barrels liked the half round better. I won’t disagree with them! Here is a picture of my 45-90 barrel. I don’t have any good pictures but it is a deluxe TD. IMG_0392.JPGIMG_0262.JPG
