The larger shank was first used on carbine #23244. This gun was at one time in the Winchester Gun Museum in New Haven, so I would imagine that it is now in the Winchester Museum in Cody. The larger shank came about primarily, because of complaints made in 1880, by the NWMP. The carbines with smaller barrel shanks, could not stand up to the hard use given them by the Mounties.
Early first model 1876 shanks were .812 diameter (same as the 1873). Keep in mind that the 1876 was an enlarged 1873. Later Winchester changed the shank diameter to .875 (same as the 1886), I suspect to accommodate the larger calibers i.e. 50-95. I have not seen a 50-95 with a small shank.
Respectfully
Mike
