Well now with that middle picture I’m worried if you have a little Red Neck in you somewhere. Wondering if you were committing drive by gopher shootings.

Always good to have an escape plan. I understand those critters will charge when wounded.

Sometimes a 300 yard shot presents itself. That would be pretty sporting with an 1873, even for a crack shot like Shrapnel.

Burt,You know I would, but very carefully. I once used a model 53 in 44WCF to shoot a bull moose. So I know your model 1873 is up to the task!

The Model 53 may be the sweetest handling of all the lever action models. They have become scarce over the years, especially guns that are original, correct and with condition. The takedown version has become really hard to find – I bought this one in 44 WCF at an Anchorage gun show almost 50 years ago. The 53 is the only model for which I never owned a checkered variation – saw one once at a gun show in Bllings, Montana but passed because it was about 70% – big mistake!

My model 53 is also a TD and in similar condition to yours. They’re like twins! I haven’t shot it in quite a few years. For the moose hunt, I loaded a “high velocity” offering with a 200 grain lead bullet. It did the trick. Kirk Durston wrote an article on model 53s for the WACA magazine and featured my hunt as part of it. I would tone down the loading for a model 1873 though.
