I looked at a 94 vintage 1873 today in 32 with a 30″ barrel that’s seen a good bit of use but still solid. On the left side plate it is inscribed ” Buffalo Bills Wild West”. It’s in an oval shape and looks just this one without the stars and name. Any ideas on being able to prove provenance?
http://www.rockislandauction.com/viewitem/aid/65/lid/1007 I’m trying to get the pic off my phone to post but having difficulties.
The one on RIA is not engraved but acid etched. is this one acid etched?

Walter,
There are lots of people that out there that have no clue to what is original condition or don’t even know that it affects the value of the gun.

You need to contact one of the administrators to get your membership straightened out with the forum but your showing as a WACA Guest according to the forum. They were lots of people including mine that had their membership messed up when they converted to the new forum. With me I had a old email address that I gave when I started to get the magazines and by the time I decided to get on the forum my email had changed so I had 2 accounts in the system.
If you want you email the photos to me at the address below and I can post them.

FWIW, you have to be both an active WACA member (dues current) AND be logged in using your member ID/password for all the member features to be enabled. I have made the mistake several times of starting a post while not logged in and finding that I’m showing as “guest”. Maybe I’m just not very bright!!!

I’ve done this too. I’m more familiar with the “v-bulletins forum format” which seems to be a little easier to maneuver in. I use it for my CKCA knife forum.

Walter,
I have never seen Winchester itself use a acid etch either. I would imaging it was done by a outside party at a later date.

I agree. If you look at the link I posted it even states that it was done later. I called Cody and it doesn’t address the acid etching. I’m guess I’m just trying to figure out if its period etched.
I take it you don’t own the gun yet from what you stated in the the first post so you can’t open it up and look inside to see if there are any special stampings linking the sideplates to the gun, my guess there isn’t going to be. Just from looking at its condition it looks like the etching was done quite a while ago but you can’t tell how long ago. I did some searching on the Buffalo Bill Show and it says in 1893 they changed the name of the show to Buffalo Bill’s Wild West and Congress of Rough Riders of the World and if this gun is a 1894 gun I would think they would of put the new name on it. It would take a lot of research into the Buffalo Bill show to find anything linking the gun to the him.
