Thought this would be interesting to share, a Winchester 1866 SRC (“2nd Model”) Serial Number is 15300. Features include:
- 1/2 inch dovetail, rear leaf sight
- Henry marked barrel
- 15300 SN on the inside of the lower tang, with matching #s on the Buttlplate & Buttstock
- Steel ring inside the receiver in the magazine tube port
- Larger retaining lug for the mainspring
Curious if anyone has ever seen a “2nd Model” with an earlier serial number? If so, do you have photos you can post up. G. Madis’ book mentions 2nd Model started at mid-15,000 range, R.L. Wilson and A. Pirkle books indicate approximately (roughly) 15500.

Robert-
Thanks for sharing your exceptional carbine, beautiful display.

Robert, I am also appreciative for you showing the carbine here, and sharing it with us. It is interesting the serial number, and the facts that you bring to the table on the others mid serial range facts that indicate you definitely have an earlier example, if not the earliest. It will be interesting to see if another member or members can add to the facts here.
