i picked up an interesting old 92 the other day. it has a 22" round barrel, button mag, and 8 3/8 forend. serial is 949134. the barrel is marked ‘nickel steel’ ‘model 92’ ‘winchester ‘ ’38wcf’. the top tang also says ‘model 92’. what year would this be made? how common is a model 92 short rifle? thanks.
Hello dane62,
Sorry to have missed this post from back in June. I was traveling around northern Michigan at the time and not always connected.
Your rifle was manufactured during the fall of 1926. Based on your description of the stamped writing on the gun it sounds correct for it’s serial number range. During 1926 and 1927 the Model designation is found on both the left barrel side and the upper tang stamp. There were lots of Model 1892 sporting rifles and carbines manufactured with shorter than standard barrel lengths. Could you send me some photos of the rifle and the details so that I might add it into my survey please?
Thanks again and sorry for the delay.
Michael
