A significant cost increase for the NS option would explain the scarcity. And the catalog doesn’t explain what the advantage of NS is supposed to be.
I think that the 22 NS bbls. were a little more corrosion resistant like stainless steel. Stainless did not have a very long life as the Japan finish wore off leaving a very ugly gun. 22 NS bbls. were discontinued by the new owner of Winchester, along with SS. With many in stock, they were installed on guns for several years later. Big Larry
