Just sitting here in my “rain addled” consiousness (10 days in a row in west-central Florida), and just realized a long-running error in my (and likely most) referencing to Winchesters then and now. Pre-64 and Post 64!!! Undeniably an incorrect reference. How about Pre-64 and Post-63. The previous designation implies that no Winchesters were made in 1964. I have NO idea how or why that popped into my head but… Thoughts????
I also have no idea of whether this has ever been brought up…

Same thing goes for pre-war and post-war…….

No, it’s different – there are prewar, wartime and postwar designations but there were never any 1964 designations; only facts to prove that there were guns built in 1964. Therefore the pre-64 designation is correct but the post-64 designation suggests NO 1964 production. Kinda like pre-83 ‘vettes and post-83 ‘vettes – exept that there was no “official” 83 production therefore the designation would be correct.
The sun just came out for 5 minutes. Now it’s raining again. Maybe I’ll think of something else that I (we) missed?

Bob,
I have been trying to educate people about the “Pre-64” and “Post-63” nomenclature for years now… if you were to look at my thousands of posts on Gunbroker.com and GunValuesBoard.com, you will see my attempts to educate the masses.

What’s in a name? That which we call a Winchester by any other ‘pre’dilection, would be as sweet. OK… so I couldn’t resist.
Yes, I’ve noted the same theoretical lost year in the common colloquial descriptors. I use the correct ones and really I think nobody notices… or cares! It’s become like so many slang terms. And having said that… My bad!
And now concerning all the bragging in this thread! Terrible! If you can’t send us at least a few drops of all that rain, how about a few 8 x 10 glossy rain scenes! Just address them to” Unidentifiable Substances Department, City of Oceanside, Ca. Please clearly mark them “Rain”!
No brag – just RAIN. I wish I could direct it to the “other” coast. It’s raining again right now – we have a serious flood deal going on all around me. I’m at 12′ elevation so no problem here. I have a small local gunshow going on about 10 miles south – don’t know if it’s flooded near there but I’ll try to go.
Bert.
Somehow I knew you would be on top of the pre-post issue. I honestly never thought about it before, I think the rain washed the “revelation” to the surface – it only took about 40 years of collecting. Let’s campaign on it from now on. Post-63 dammit!!!!!!

IMHO… the terms “pre-64” and “post-64” are simply colloquial (Definition: “used in ordinary or familiar conversation; not formal or literary”) terms used by collectors to denote a series of major changes in the design of Winchester firearms that occurred circa 1963-1964.
Like using the term “carbine” to describe a “pre-war” Model 70 standard rifle with the catalogued optional 20 inch barrel, or referring to a Model 70 “1st variation Target Model” as a “Sniper’s Match” rifle, as was once common practice.
Such terms may not be correct in the “formal or literary” sense, but say them and everybody knows what you are talking about. While I am capable, if pressed, of using the English language as intended, I do not feel it essential to place formality over clarity in conversing within a peer group.
Looks like central Florida is in for more rain today…

Continuing the irresistible streak. Some years ago under US State Dept auspices, I had the opportunity to work in Russia with the Russian national police (MVD). The vaguities of interpretations/translations were always a problem. Fortunately working in policy areas rather than such involving critical events, collateral damage seldom anything more than simple head shaking humor.
Yet to the point, There, I learned a prevalent Russian saying, which itself translated loosely as:
“Three vodkas and we understand each other perfectly!” After considerable ‘research’ and abundant volunteers, we discovered a factual basis!
In that post Soviet detente era closing the last Millennium…
Those WERE the days my friend!
