My grandmother has had a winchester in her closet for since I can remember. We looked at the gun again as adults and found out that based on the serial (806561)it was made around 1916. Is there any way to find specific details based on the serial like owner or area purchased? Completely ignorant of old guns but it would be cool if we could find anything.

Probably not–such factory records as still exist don’t provide that kind of specific detail; your grandmother’s recollections may be your best hope for further info, if she’s still around to tell you.
You didn’t mention the model but I’m guessing a 94 from the serial number and date. Unfortunately the 94 records stop at before your serial number which are at the Cody firearms museum and that would only include the configuration as it left the factory and the dates. You can get the date the receiver was serial numbered from them. Any other information can only come from past owners.

Hello Mike,
If that serial number is on a Model 1892 rifle it does in fact correspond to production from 1916. As the others have mentioned though there are no surviving records as to where or whom the rifle was originally sold to. I am working on a research survey of these rifles and would love to add it into my data. Can you send me a series of photos of the gun including the areas of stamped writing on it to my email please? I am happy to attempt to answer any further questions that you may have. [email protected]
Thanks
Michael

I recently inherited a Winchester Rifle. It is described as a .32 calibre, Model 1892 and Serial Number 163. It is also in perfect original condition with a beautiful aged patina. It was my Grandfather’s first purchase when arrived at Fremantle Western Australia from Great Britain. It was purchased on the wharf in Fremantle 1923 from a American gentleman who was returning to the US.
Would love to know about its history and where else it might have travelled!

Model 1892 serial number 163 was manufactured in August, 1892, and was a 44 WCF caliber Rifle. It is not possible for it to be a 32 caliber. If you can do so, please provide several clear pictures of the rifle (to include the factory markings on the barrel and the upper tang of the receiver frame).
