Were Win model 1895’s Ever Drilled and Tapped for a Tang Sight?

As did the top tang ever have that front mounting hole?

The geometry of the receiver?  Just curious?  Thanks.

If you mean the length of the bolt travel, I think so.  Would have been more useful to D&T them for the Lyman 21, especially designed for it.

We were fortunate to see a lot of ledger entries while working on the Model 1895 book.  There are notations for tang sights having been installed at the factory, but not very often.  The Marble Special Base sights are one example that was used.  Like Clarence says, the Lyman receiver sights were almost always used when a rear aperture sight was installed.  Lyman patent text and advertising for the Lyman No. 21 mentions the long bolt travel of rifles like the ’95.

I have noticed tang sights on ’95s in old photos more often than I’ve expected and would have to guess that many of those were put on post-factory.

Clarence and Brad;

Thank you for your Replies.  Agreed, the Lyman number 21 seems to be popular on the 1895’s.

I read somewhere in print that 1 in 10 1895’s were factory tapped on the tang for a tang sight.  I have no idea how they came up with this number.  I wonder if there are examples of rifles that were factory tapped but not shipped with a tang sight.
