Suppose you are browsing around at your local gun show and you come across a very rough-looking Model 94.  Bore is not good either.  However the price on it is appropriate for the condition its in.  The SN indicates about 1940 manufacture.  Then you notice a “W” under the SN.  Would you purchase?

The W doesn’t add any value to me.  There seem to be quite a few of them available.

Nope. I never buy junk guns. The “W” marked guns are not rare at all. I have a nice one # 1264772, PR 2-3-1941. It is about a 98%+ carbine. I waited for a long time to get a nice one for my collection. I also have a “W” marked M62. There are others from this period as well. Big Larry

As the other fellows have stated, the “W” marked guns are quite common, and it adds nothing to the value. Thus far, I have surveyed nearly (500) Model 94s with the “W” marking, and (74) Model 64s with it.

Just out of curiosity, what’s the significance of the “W” stamp? What does it tell us about a particular rifle?

What are your plans for the rifle? What price do you feel is appropriate? If it’s a hard-used (but not abused) specimen and the bore is rough but probably shootable it may make for a good “shooter”. Unfortunately I have all the “shooters” I will ever shoot so I’d probably pass.

It tells us that it was manufactured sometime between February 1939 – February 1941, and that is was blued with the then new Du-light bluing formula. Otherwise, it has no significance.

Thanks. I thought I saw it discussed elsewhere but search seems to ignore really short words (or letters).

And you don’t want anything better than that to carry in the gun rack on your ATV, in a saddle scabbard, or over your shoulder while climbing a steep talus slope.
