Hello,

I recently picked up a Winchester 94 that seems different to me and I’m looking for some expertise.  The serial number dates to 1901 but is ended with a W.  222020W.  What does the W mean?  Any help would be appreciated.  I have 4 photos to show but it doesn’t look like I have access to post photos…..

Hello,

Is your Winchester a Model “1894” or is it a Model “94” ?

Serial number 222020 would be a Model “1894” (as marked on the upper tang), and it was manufactured mid-year 1904.

Winchester did not ever use a “W” suffix on any of the Model 1894 or Model 94 manufactured from October 1894 through the md 1960s.

Thank you for your response.  You are correct that it should be a model 1894 but interestingly there is no stamping anywhere on the rifle that notes the model, including no markings on the top of the tang.  There is most definitely a W stamped at the end of the serial number, that’s the mystery of the rifle.  I’m still not able to add photos so I will email them to the address you provided, thank you.

I very much suspect that it is a modern (post 1963) production Model 94, but the pictures will tell the story.
