I was comparing the upper tang markings on a couple of my 1894 carbines. According to Renneberg’s Model 94 book, both are in the serial number range to have the Type 4 tang marking. Both are essentially the same as far as the content goes, but my Spruce gun (serial number 849681) has a little bit different font style that my other 1894 carbine (serial number 832405). I thought this was a little strange. I’m assuming there were some variations in the roll dies that were being used? Or did I discover a new style tang marking?

Don
Don,
Winchester employed a fair number of people in their Tool & Die shop, and each one of them had their own set of tools for cutting the dies. Accordingly, no two dies in the same series were physically identical. Both of your Carbines have the Type-4 series marking.
