Anyone know why a 1962 vintage Model 94 would have a small number 2 stamped on the receiver just under the large screw at the rear of the receiver and also the same number 2 on the very rear left side of the barrel just forward of the receiver? Both were applied BEFORE bluing so they had to be done at the factory. I’ve never seen the side of a receiver stamped with ANY letter or number and having the matching 2 on the barrel means there is some type of significance. Thanks

I very much doubt that they are assembly numbers.  Can you post pictures showing the markings?

Mike,

I have never seen similar markings on a Model 94 (and I have looked at more than 12,000 of them in the past 15-years).  I do not have any idea what or why that particular Model 94 was marked.

I have never seen anything like it on Model 1892’s either.

Wel. If you two haven’t seen one then?. What would be a reason that Winchester would stamp that number on the receiver and barrel and then blue it. I have checked the butt plate but I’m gonna remove it at home.

Winchester most likely did not do the re bluing and stamping…That is what they are trying to tell you.

Gun isn’t RE-blued. I will absolutely guarantee that. There is blue in the numbers so it was definitely done factory, no doubt.

Not having the gun in my hand I can not guarantee anything.  The bottom picture you posted makes the blue a little foggy.  Just because there is blue in the number only means the number was stamped before it was blued.

I understand what your saying. I deal in pre 64’s for a living and can guarantee with 100% certainty it is original finish. Thanks
