This is an odd gun. What do you make of it? Looks like a post 64 address on a pre 64 barrel pattern. Did Winchester make replacement barrels for the pre 64 model 70 in the late 60s or 70s?

That’s a pre64 barrel that looks like it’s been shortened. There’s also an extra hole in the rear bridge.
How stupid not to use a base of the correct length! .300 Win Mag was introduced in 1963, so how would you get one in ’55?
Gun isn’t worth half the asking price.

IMHO…
This rifle is a late 1950s (type III-3 action) that was probably chambered originally in 30-06 and subsequently restocked/rebarreled to 300 WIN MAGNUM.
Since I’m “borrowing” e-mail access I’ve not looked too close at the barrel stamp but it MIGHT (???) be a genuine pre-64 barrel with the front sight ramp (silver brazed on) removed or barrel shortened. Note there is a rear barrel sight boss (dovetail blank installed) and that the “R” trademark symbol is on about half-ish of the pre-64 300 WIN MAGNUM barrels (check Rule – he’s right on this)… The stock is much than the gun (narrow panel machine checkering) and probably has a non-factory pad.
If the term “Frankenchester” were considered appropriately applied to late pre-64 guns, this would be one. Probably an “in-use” upgrade by the owner, but pretty much “parts” now…
Just my take …
