1. when did Winchester start shipping 1886’s standard with round barrel?2. when did Winchester stop case hardening the 1886 receivers?
thanks for your help
Round barrels were standard on all Model 1886 rifles from day one of the production run.
Blued receiver frames were standard on all of the ELW (extra light weight) rifles, and all of the Take Down rifle regardless of when they were manufactured. Case color finishing was officially discontinued in August 1901, but began to be phased out in late 1899.

Bert,
just so I am clear on this if the round barrel was standard all the ones I see with octagon barrels were special orders?

No that is not correct. Round barrels, Octagon barrels, and Half-octagon barrels were all standard (optional) orders. It just so happens that Octagon barrels were more frequently ordered.

October 1886 Catalog No. 41
Thanks for the explanation
The only difference is illustrated by my 1916 catalog where the M1886 could be ordered with a 26 inch round barrel rifle was priced at $19.50 and the 26 inch octagon barreled rifle was $21.00. No special ordering involved – you specified one or the other and you had to choose. These same rifles had a choice of full or half magazine – the price was the same. The purchaser was also requested, “specify whether gun should be sighted for Black of Smokeless Powder.” None of this was “special order”. Simply a matter of what you selected.
