Is it true that there are two different Winchester rifles designated as a Model 55?

One is a rifle similar to the older Winchester Model 94 rifle,

and the other is a Single Shot .22 caliber rimfire rifle.

Has any other gunmaker produced completely different models with the same model number?

Yes, it is true, and that is not the only instance where Winchester used the same Model number for two entirely different firearms.

Model 59 .22 caliber rim fire bolt-action rifle

Model 59 semi-auto shotgun

That’s most interesting, I knew about the Model 55 being two different models, but not about the two Model 59  numbers.Knew of the Model 59 shotgun, but not the .22 rifle.

I wonder why they would use the same numbers for two different models?Someone forgot about the  earlier number?Smile

I suspect that somebody at Winchester forget about the Model 59 .22 rim fire rifle.  It was developed in 1929, and only marketed for one year (1930).  It was discontinued after just 9,293 were manufactured.  The Model 59 Semi-auto shotgun arrived on the scene 20-years later in 1959, which leads me to believe that whomever it was that assigned the model designation to it, was unaware of the Model 59 rifle from 20-years earlier. Of course, this is just my guess.
